About me

About me:

I'm Tom, a second year undergraduate studying single honours English at the University of Durham. I’m also Social Secretary (Commander-in-Chief of fun) of the University English Society, a keen cricket player, and enthusiastic wearer of sweat-shorts.

My Experience:

- I currently mentor 7 first-year undergraduate students as part of the mentorship cheme at Trevelyan College. I therefore take responsibility for their academic progress, give them guidance about developing their academic skills, and answer any queries that they have about studying literature at degree level.
- As part of the English Society mentorship scheme, I also take part in one-to-one mentoring with first-year undergraduate students.
- I am also involved in GCSE and A level tutoring for disadvantaged students, which entails delivering one-to-one weekly sessions based on specific examined curricula.

I’d love to use these skills to help you out with your GCSEs and A Levels.

Our Tutorials:

- Most tutorials will last around an hour, and that’s all you pay for. However, in order to maximise the benefit you get from our sessions, I can also send out prep work for you to complete before our tutorials, or review work to consolidate what we have learned, so that we can then quantify and keep track of your progress. This way we don’t waste time in tutorials and get the most out of our face-to-face contact.
- All of the work that we do in and on top of our tutorials will be tailored to suit you. In our ‘meet-the-tutor’ session, we will go over exactly what needs you have and design a programme of sessions to cater specifically for your personal development.

Why have an English tutor?

English is not a subject that can be mastered simply with rote learning, or indeed practice alone. In order to excel, one must learn to think in a certain way; a way that is often counter-intuitive. Unfortunately, this is not something that can easily be taught in a classroom environment. However, with the right one-to-one tutoring, you can excel in your English studies and get the grades you deserve.

What next?

You can send me a webmail or book a ‘meet-the-tutor’ session via this website, and we can start working together to design some tutorials that will help you out with whatever you’re struggling with.
