Degree: History (Bachelors) - Durham University
I am Alasdair, and am currently studying BA (hons) History as a second year at Durham University.
My own experience of having been tutored is one of the main reasons I decided to register as a tutor - the other being my passion for History, if you pardon the cliché. I know just how much of a difference one-to-one tuition can make; it helped me achieve high grades and to win a place at one of the top Universities in the UK, both overall and for History (Durham was ranked as the top UK History Department by the Complete University Guide in 2015 and by the Times and Sunday Times in 2013 and 2014, and second by the Guardian University Guide in 2015).
As well as experience of being tutored, I also have experience of tutoring. In the past I have been asked by friends to give one-to-one lessons on various historical topics. In addition, I volunteered as a History teaching assistant for 18 months at my secondary school.
Areas of specialism include 20th and 21st century British history, the British Empire, Stalin’s Russia, and high medieval Europe. At A-level, as well as an A* in History and 100% in my Extended Project Qualification, which was history based, I achieved an A* in Economics and an A grade in Government and Politics. At GCSE I achieved ten A*'s and one A grade (including an A* in History). As a result, I am particularly well placed to address these themes in history. Having said this, I have a broad background knowledge of History so would be willing and able to teach any area, and would make sure to gain a high level of knowledge of any area before the related lessons.
Further experience includes working as a research intern with the Durham History department supervised by a Professor on a project titled ‘The impact of elections: voting and political behaviour in sub-Saharan Africa’, and attendance at a number conferences on various historical, political, and philosophical issues.
I do not have a particular method or focus in my teaching, as I feel it is important to teach in a method that is appropriate to each student, as well as concentrating on aspects with which individual students struggle. Therefore, I am happy to concentrate on anything the student wishes, whether this is exam technique, essay structure, or simply content.
I am fairly flexible and should be able to fit in students any day of the week.
I look forward to meeting you!
