About me

Hi! My name is John and I recently graduated from a Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA at the University of Oxford. Hi! My name is John and I recently graduated from a Philosophy, Politics and Economics BA at the University of Oxford. I really enjoy how learning about any different subject gives you a different way of understanding the world, and this is what drew me to PPE. Once you’ve got into the philosophical or economic way of thinking, the subject becomes yours to explore and it stops being a chore and becomes fascinating. This is something anyone can do, it’s just about finding the right way of presenting the subject and the theory behind it.

I also love how well my subject can work around my enthusiasm for maths. I took two maths A levels and sat the Cambridge maths entrance exam for fun after I had already settled on PPE, so it wouldn’t be a stretch to call me a weird maths nerd. I just love how neat and orderly the subject is once you have a proper understanding of what it is you’re doing, and I find myself relying on it a lot in my degree across all three subjects.

At university I was the Treasurer of the Oxford Revue and enjoy doing stand-up and sketches, so would try and make my lessons both informative and fun.

About my sessions

My sessions will consist of a tailored approach to each individual student's strengths and weaknesses, and will attempt to find the way they best understand the subject - all too often, talented pupils are let down because their teachers do not properly explain what they’re teaching or explain in a very specific and dogmatic way that not everyone is able to understand.

As a result, the first session will be a more general look at the student's understanding of their tutoring subject, discussing the subject and its main issues, and asking questions on it, so we can work out what to do next.

This means that the following sessions can be built around bolstering the skills and understanding I can see they already have, while going through the subjects they struggle with in a targeted way to work on the areas that they are finding more difficult and help them to understand them in their own way. I will set goals and monitor these as we go along, through timetabled discussions and example exam questions, to ensure that progress is being made.
