About me

I am a current PhD Student at the University of Glasgow, looking into Bishop Robert Grosseteste's (c.1175-1253) conception of music, the impact this had on the early Franciscans and J S Bach. Alongside this I have a background in academic politics - gaining my BA from the University of York and my MA from Queen's University Belfast. I am also a multi-instutmentalist, meaning I have a wealth of knowledge to draw on when teaching

My chosen field of study is close to my heart due to having been a Chorister at Lincoln Cathedral, as well as this there is very little written on how Grosseteste conceived of music. But, we do know that he paid for a Harpist to live full time next to his study so he could hear music day or night. In my experience music can help when revising for exams or applying for University, at whatever level. So, not only do I understand the pressure you may be under but also that to help you achieve your goals and improve teaching must be given in a calm & understanding way

Outside of University I am Agent to a Conductor & Pianist, enjoy literature, art, music more generally and visiting stately homes. I also thoroughly enjoy traveling as widely and in as an immersive way as I can, learning to me isn't just something done behind a book - it has to be an experience

About my sessions

The way I structure my lessons is twofold - 1) Getting to know you and what you want to achieve and 2) The actual teaching

The first lesson is all about number 1, you - you tell me exactly what you want to do, what you think you may need to improve on and why. This is all done very informally, it is hoped that in doing this you will relax into your learning from day one; in effect its mental yoga. From this I then go away and set up a strategy and diary of lessons, which we begin more formally in lesson two. Lessons take an hourly, or two hourly, format where we discuss a particular topic in the first 10-15 minute (as set out in the schedule). Following this we have a 30-40 minute discussion around the topic and then I invite the pupil to sum up in the last 10-15 minutes - then, after the lesson I type up my notes and send them over to you.

I believe learning is encouraged by enjoying a topic, so my ultimate aim is that you come out of my lessons with increased intellectual curiosity thanks to a deeper understanding of your topic/s. Progress will be measured by a test on a fortnightly to three weekly basis, then ultimately a mini-Exam at the end of my time with you
