About me

I am a fully qualified teacher with several years experience working as an English teacher in a high school. I have been tutoring for three years and am currently a full time tutor with my own freelance business. I am available to tutor English (Literature, Language, World Literature and entrance exams) along with university application (personal statements and Oxbridge preparation), university admission tests (ELAT) and career advancement (CV help and interview skills). I am also TEFL qualified and available to tutor students with English as an additional language.

With 9 GCSE's obtained at grade A*, three A Levels obtained at grade A and an upper second class degree from The University of Warwick, I have effective subject knowledge which I am able to use in my teaching. I have a PGCE in Education from The University of Manchester, a 150 hour TEFL qualification, Qualified Teacher Status rated as outstanding and I am currently undertaking a Masters in Education. I also have a range of experience in supporting students with university application. I have tutored college students on higher education progression through the Teach First Futures programme and I have worked on the Futures Easter Summer School at Oxford University where I coached students on Oxbridge progression and preparation.

I personally love English and read widely. In my degree I focussed on World Literature, Romantic poetry and Shakespeare.

Chloe has simply been brilliant with my daughter. My daughter is not the fastest of learners and we were upfront with Chloe at the beginning that we needed a patient but goal-focused tutor that can assist my daughter achieve her target grades. The improvement with my daughter has been great. Her English teacher in school even gave her 10 'performance points' last week for the work she produced in school. Thanks Chloe.

We live overseas and needed help with UK exam prep for our 11&13 year olds. Both children rate Chloe 10/10. She put kids at ease, gave them excellent thinking tips under time pressure. Will definitely be using her again in the future.

Questions Chloe has answered

What are the main literary devices and what effect do they have?

There are various literary devices a writer can use in their work. These are usually used to improve the quality of a description and to achieve desired effects. Keep an eye out for writers using these in their work and experiment with using them yourself.Today I will go over some of the main literary devices. A simile is where a writer compares two unrealistci things using ‘like’ or ‘as’. For example: ‘the house was like a bomb site’. A simile can help a reader to imagine the description (this is called imagery) and also creates a sense of exaggeration (the house if not really a bomb site). In some cases they can even be humorous. A metaphor is very similar to a simile however we don’t use ‘like’ or ‘as’. Instead, we simply say something is something else. This can achieve the same desired effect as a simile however can also create a lyrical or poetic feel: ‘carpets of snow lined the corridors’.A further literary devices is alliteration. This is where a writer has two or more words starting with the same letter, for example: ‘the rain ratteled against the rooftops’. Advertisers often use alliteration because it is memorable – it draws our attention to it and makes us stop and notice. When writing think about which parts you would like the reader to notice and consider using alliteration. Finally, I would like to look at personificaiton. This is where an inanimate object is given a human quality. For example: ‘the trees bowed their heads, exhausted and fatigues fom years of carrying heavy branches’. Personificaton can literally inject ‘life’ into your work and can also add to the overall tone and mood you are trying to create. There are various literary devices a writer can use in their work.
