Hi! I'm Sarah and I'm a recent law graduate from the University of Edinburgh. I have always been a bit of a bookworm and so, English was absolutely my favourite subject at school. This is also why I chose a heavily reading and essay-writing based subject at university.

At secondary school I was taught, and continue to believe, that exam technique is equally as essential to success as a knowledge of the curriculum. With seven years of Music, English and Gaelic tutoring experience, I am confident in my ability to teach students of varying levels essay-writing technique, exam strategy, and studying skills (as well as going over the content of the exams they are studying for!). Having been through the system myself, I understand the common issues for students - be it being unable to analyse symbolism, struggling to form a concise argument, or simply not knowing how to structure an essay. I have experienced all of these at some point and would love to use my knowledge to help other students. I love teaching and I am determined to help any student that I can to overcome hurdles, meet targets, and exceed expectations.

About my sessions

My lesson structure always begins with a basic assessment of the foundations of knowledge. I will check that the student is confident in the main themes and the chain of events of the literature, whether there are more specific or more general issues, any gaps in knowledge or any specific elements of writing-technique that need work on. Secondly I will follow with a recap of covered materials, school work and progress levels. I'll establish targets, whether it be the achievement of a cert...

I'll establish targets, whether it be the achievement of a certain grade, advice on study and exam strategies, or simply a boost in confidence and greater understanding of the materials.

In preparation for tutorials, I will re-familiarise myself with whichever source material will be focused on and prepare a variety of practice questions and example answers to discuss. I am always happy to consider parental feedback, address any specific concerns, and I am also willing to offer feedback on any school work, coursework or homework. My main aims in tutoring are to provide a personalised method for each student to learn the basic rules of critical reading and essay writing, how to best apply these in an exam setting and how to study efficiently to achieved their targeted grades or better.
