About me

I studied Natural Sciences at undergraduate level, specialising in chemistry, and will start a Masters course at Imperial College London this September. At Cambridge, I was involved in rowing, netball and dance, as well as my college’s Feminist Society. I have always loved the problem-solving nature of both science and maths and how science in particular allows you to ask why things happen the way they do. The nature of my undergraduate course means that I have studied chemistry, physics, bio...

At Cambridge, I was involved in rowing, netball and dance, as well as my college’s Feminist Society. I have always loved the problem-solving nature of both science and maths and how science in particular allows you to ask why things happen the way they do. The nature of my undergraduate course means that I have studied chemistry, physics, biology and maths at university level. I also have a range of prior tutoring experience from Key Stage 3 all the way through to A-Level, including volunteering as a teaching assistant in a Year 13 chemistry class during my final year of study. For me, science and maths have always been about discussing problems and ideas and using that to further understanding. I hope that by working together in tutoring sessions to work through examples and explore fundamental principles, I will not only be able to help consolidate a student's learning, but also push it further and help them enjoy learning how our world works.

About my sessions

Prior to our first session, I will find out from the student what they are most looking to get out of our sessions. I believe it is very important for tutorials to be student-led and will adapt my lesson plans to what works best for an individual student. Prior to our first session, I will find out from the student what they are most looking to get out of our sessions. I believe it is very important for tutorials to be student-led and will adapt my lesson plans to what works best for an individual student. At the start of a session, we will discuss any specific questions the student may have about the topic, before going through the fundamental principles together. We will then work through some example problems and I will always prompt the student to consider why they are approaching a question a certain way. My tutoring style is very discussion-based and I encourage students to ask as many questions as possible as I think this is the best way to progress in science. When I was preparing for school exams, I found it really helpful to condense the important information from topics on to cue cards or mindmaps. At the end of a session, we will discuss the key points to help the student create their own revision aids. Depending on what exactly the student is looking for from the sessions, I may set a further example problem for the student to try before the next session, or give them a question to think about. At the start of the next session, we will go through this together. I will also encourage the student to show me any revision aids they make.
