Geology and Geophysics (Integrated Masters) - Edinburgh University

About me

I’m a first year student at Edinburgh University studying Geology and Geophysics. I love my course so far as there’s so many new and interesting things to learn about including more in depth knowledge of natural hazards and several field trips to intriguing geological sites.

Exams are meant to be difficult and I will always find them so, but I found over time with the right technique that revision became less of a chore, and it’s always exciting to realise I’ve successfully completed the next stage of education!

My hobbies are a great relaxant for me – either curling up with a book for a few hours, or searching for adrenaline inducing activities like climbing, they are a fantastic way for me to escape the world and have a breather from my studies for a little while.

About my sessions

My lessons will be full of chances for questions so no-one is confused, as well as diagrams to help the more visual learners. Sometimes the first way of explaining a subject doesn’t work so I will endeavour to find multiple ways to explain every subject.

I find tailoring a lesson to a student’s needs is best done through having an example from the student on what they don’t understand. This way I can provide further examples that are fully relevant instead of only partly answering the query.

Progress is important and an easy way to measure this will be to do a few questions on the previous subject at the beginning of each session – this keeps everything fresh and ensures it is fully understood.

I have some experience teaching children – a short work experience in France teaching English, and working as a climbing instructor (this includes working with adults and explaining the same thing in a multitude of ways), and I always help my little sister with her homework when needed.

Preparing for my exams took a few trial and error attempts, but the method for me was writing down everything I knew about a subject (very quickly found what I didn’t know) and doing exam questions again and again to get the ‘feel’ of how a question is asked.
