Hi!


My name is Archie, I'm a medical student at the University of Leeds. I tutor in Biology, Maths and Chemistry up to GCSE, and can also help with personal statements for medicine and medical applications in general.


I love what I do, and would love to be able to help you achieve what you want to do as well! I am happy to help in whatever way I can, and will ensure every penny is worth it. If you'd like tips on how best to revise for exams, just ask!

About my sessions

My approach to tutoring is flexible to your needs. Before the session I will ask if there is anything in particular you would like help with, and then I will tailor my lesson to suit you and your learning style. I firmly believe everybody has a different way of learning, and while school works for some it certainly does not work for everyone. I aim to always find a way to make it work for you, regardless of your learning style, and I will make it enjoyable in the process!


I want to make sure you fully understand the core concepts of the subject, not only because it makes the subject far more interesting, but it will give you a far better chance of tackling a question you haven't seen before in the exam.

Define osmosis.

Osmosis is the net movement of free water molecules from an area of higher water potential to an area of lower water potential through a partially permeable membrane.

Water potential = a measure of the number of free water molecules there are in a solution.
Partially permeable membrane = a membrane with tiny holes in it that allows tiny molecules such as water to pass through
"Net" because the water molecules move in both both directions, but move in one direction more than the other.
"Free" because only the water molecules that are not attached to any solutes in the solution can pass through the membrane.
"Higher" and lower", not just "high" and low", because the water potential can be low in one solution but even lower in the other solution and osmosis will still occur.

How many moles are there in 88g of carbon dioxide?

To work this out we need the equation:

Number of moles = Mass (in grams) / Mr (relative formula mass)

We know the mass of carbon dioxide already (88g). We need to work out the Mr of carbon dioxide. The Mr can be calculated by adding up all of the relative atomic masses of each atom in the compound. In carbon dioxide (CO2) we have 1 carbon atom, and 2 oxygen atoms. The relative atomic masses of carbon and oxygen are given in the periodic table in the top left corner.

Mr of CO2 = 12 + 16 + 16 = 44

Using this we can now work out the number of moles in 88g of CO2:

Moles = 88 / 44 = 2 moles
