Hi! I'm Josie, an IB survivor and a graduate of Oxford University. I am currently pursuing a MA in History at UCL's School of Slavonic and Eastern European Studies.

Completing the IB programme at Hockerill Anglo-European College surrounded by teachers and students who were so enthusiastic about the subjects they taught and studied helped me to realise how important it is to have a genuine passion for the subject you study. It was during this time I consolidated my love for History, and decided that I wanted to progress with the subject to further education. The opportunity to study at Oxford was incredible; because of the breadth of the course, I was able pick options in order to create a course that was completely unique to me and my interests, studying topics that ranged from the treatment of homicide in the late Anglo-Saxon period to Cultural-Education in the Gulag. The latter course inspired me to pursue Russian History further at a postgraduate level.

I have experience tutoring a range of ages and abilities, from assisting friends with Personal Statements, to running an informal maths club after school, to helping Year 7 and 8 students with Maths and English before school. I am also a karate instructor and coach both young children and adults on a bi-weekly basis.

In our Free Meeting I would like to learn a little more about you, your personal aims and what you would like to get from these online sessions. That way I can tailor my lessons so that they best suit you!

I can offer lessons focusing on revising content, consolidating knowledge of the syllabus, practising exam technique and answering exam questions, and experimenting with different methods of learning and remembering material. For History and English Literature, a key difficulty students that encounter is that there is no straightforward answer when it comes to answering exam questions. As such, I aim to build confidence in creating arguments and developing opinions in essays in order to help students achieve the very best marks.

I am also more than willing to read and provide face-to-face feedback on written coursework, practice papers and Personal Statements. I found during my time at Sixth Form and University that getting a second opinion on written work is extremely useful and valuable, as teachers often only have time to read one or two drafts.

For HAT and Oxbridge preparation, the sessions will centre around reading, discussing and debating an unseen passage which I will provide. These sessions will help prepare you to utilise your skill-set and knowledge to answer trickier and more challenging questions about History as a discipline.
