About me

Hello,

Thank you

for taking the time to look at my profile. I am a Classics graduate of the

University of Edinburgh who also has a PGCE in Classics teaching. Although

currently based in London, I taught at a leading preparatory school in Scotland

for two years as Head of the Classics department, Assistant Housemistress in

the junior boarding house and sports coach in multiple disciplines. I now tutor

full-time, both online and in person. Having completed A Levels in English,

French and Latin, as well as choosing a language based degree, I have a sound

understanding of how language works. This is bolstered by my continued language

learning: in 2015 I travelled around Italy attending various Italian language

schools and am currently learning Spanish and (attempting!) Mandarin. I find

that this understanding of language aids me immensely in my tutoring of Latin

language as I am able to anticipate where pupils are likely to encounter

difficulties and indeed from where these difficulties may be arising. Although

a "dead language", I am a firm believer in the benefits of learning

Latin and studying the ancient world. Not only does it help in significantly

expanding our range of English vocabulary, but also offers a wealth of

opportunities to view today's world, replete with moral, political and social

issues, through the lens of the ancient world.

About my sessions

At the beginning of every lesson the lesson aims will be made apparent in order that, by the end of the lesson, pupils have a clear idea of the progress that has been made over the course of that lesson. If pupils wish to contact me via the MyTutor platform prior to the commencement of the lesson they can highlight any areas requiring specific focus and give details of any past papers they are working on. This is recommended if at all possible as it gives me the opportunity to prepare as thoroughly as possible and ensure that no valuable lesson time is wasted. Lessons will be dialogue based and pupils will be encouraged, with my help, to find the correct answers for themselves. This also helps to retain the attention of the pupil throughout the entirety of the lesson. Online tools, as well as more practical resources such as mini whiteboards, will be used to in order that written work can be shown by pupil to teacher and vice versa. No single student is the same and therefore, following the free initial lesson, every effort will be made to accommodate the needs and learning requirements of the individual student. Please do not hesitate to be in touch if you would like any further information regarding the above and I hope to hear from you soon.
