I am a second year Master of Physics student at the University of Birmingham. I grew up in Manchester, where I sat my GCSE's and A-Levels, achieving highly in a variety of subjects. Maths and Physics are particularly interesting to me because not only do I excel in those fields but I regard them to be increasingly vital in the modern world - the 21st century will always need mathematicians. Physics itself is such a large umbrella term - there are so many branches and specialisations - that I could never grow bored of it. In fact, I have joined multiple Physics societies at university in order to broaden my knowledge of the vast spectrum of topics it has to offer as a subject. Despite this, I have found the key to success in exams isn't necessarily the content of the course, but the technique used when answering exam questions. Once this mentality is adopted, particularly for mathematics, one finds that revision becomes practice more than anything else. It is this school of thought that helped me to achieve success in exams and it is one that I hope to instil into students.

About my sessions

My lessons begin with a brief catch-up: what has the student been struggling with in the past week; how they are coping with balancing work and general life etc.

My lessons begin with a brief catch-up: what has the student been struggling with in the past week; how they are coping with balancing work and general life etc.

I will have been provided with what the student wishes to work on in that particular session and will have devised a lesson plan that best tackles this subject. If it is a Physics topic, I will generally start with the basics of the theory, in order to ensure the student has a sound understanding of the topic with a solid foundation.

Once the theory of the topic is completely understood, I will move onto several exam questions. I will begin with simpler exam questions that are fairly standard and don't require anything other than a small amount of core theory or the usual mathematical method. I will then increase the difficulty of the questions, perhaps introducing multiple steps. This forces the student to not only consider their chosen topic, but to improve their exam technique. I find the key to answering more involved questions correctly is planning out your method. This not only allows for a deeper use of their understanding, but it also saves time in an exam situation. Once several of these exam questions have been completed, we will either move onto a different topic or I will backtrack and teach some more depending on my satisfaction with their demonstration of understanding. Either way, the two focuses are complete comprehension of the topic, and improving technique.

Will is a fantastic tutor, I went from getting low grades to some of the highest grades in my class. He's helped me with numerous topic making them far easier to understand by explaining the theory then going through questions, he has also taught me some alternate ways to solve them.
