About me

Hi! My name is Arwen Greenwood and I’m a first year medical student at Newcastle University. I also love a challenge, and as medicine combines scientific knowledge, professional practice and complicated interpersonal skills, it definitely fits that description.

I’m currently enjoying university life, particularly all the new opportunities I can experience. I love art, such as photography and fashion and I’ve had much fun learning kendo, a Japanese martial art, and Latin and ballroom dancing.

Exams are some of the most stressful moments of your life, especially if your university application hangs in the balance. My final A level exams were some of my hardest school moments and I worried a lot about my grades that I needed to get into medical school. (I didn’t want to go through the application process all over again, it was even worse than the exams!) But proper study and revision paces out throughout the year is a great step to ensuring that you feel more comfortable and prepared when exam day comes. Positives of exams (and there are some even if it doesn’t feel like it in the moment) include challenging yourself, seeing how much you’ve learned and grown, to compare your abilities between subjects and peers, and to show future employers and course directors your dedication and knowledge.

About my sessions

Everybody is an individual. We all learn, excel and struggle differently. I try to tailor every session to the student, because that is the most efficient and effective way to get most out of a tutoring session. In the first few lessons I might work with how the student learns best, i.e. through verbal study, writing tasks, practical engagement etc. And then adjust my teaching style to include more of these.

A typical session structure might include:

A pre-session note about what needs to be covered, what areas are difficult and why

An overview and quick quiz of what had been studied previously

A chance to ask any questions or queries about past session topics or anything that will be covered in that session

Review of the session topic (talking through the topic, picking out key information, pointing out learning strategies) whilst ensuring that the student is understanding what is being said and any questions are answered

Quick questions to test understanding and knowledge of topic after review

Lastly, I will direct the student to good revision material; websites, videos, question banks, and give another opportunity to ask about anything they are struggling with or if they need advice in something.
