About me

Hello! I’m a second year Theoretical Physics Student at Newcastle University, whilst my primary interest is in Physics and Maths, I’ve also enjoyed studying Chemistry, both last year and at A-level. These subjects have always appealed to me because of their problem solving nature, being given something completely new to solve and diving straight in. My tutoring style will be therefore be mostly problem based, as the best way to make progress in any of these subjects is seeing how they’re applied.

About my sessions

The sessions will focus on whatever it is that you have found challenging so far in terms of the course you’re doing. Or else really shoring up the more difficult aspects of the subject and feeling comfortable tacking tricky questions. Having good exam technique is also paramount to doing well, so looking through real past exam papers will be incorporated into the sessions.

Questions Alexander has answered

Why are electrons added to the 4s orbitals before the 3d?

Whilst the 4s orbitals are in a higher energy level, the 4s sub-shell is closer to the nucleus than the 3d. This means that electrons in the 4s are lower in energy than those in the 3d, therefore it is a more stable arrangement to fill these orbitals first. In the electronic structure of an atom, the lowest energy arrangement will always be the most stable.Whilst the 4s orbitals are in a higher energy level, the 4s sub-shell is closer to the nucleus than the 3d.
