I have a thorough understanding of the English curriculum from KS3 right through to A level, having developed a range of curriculum's as Deputy Head of English in my school.

With 13 GCSE's, three A Levels obtained at grade A-A* (including English Literature, English Language and History) and an upper second class degree from The University of Bristol (a Russell Group University), I have a strong subject knowledge which I am able to employ in my teaching. I also have a PGCE in Education from The University of Exeter and I have recently completed a Masters in Transformational Leadership.

My favourite thing about teaching English is that there is no right answers and I love discussing with students their different interpretations of literary texts. I find encouraging students to explore their original ideas and think critically about a text, and the author’s craft, incredibly rewarding and enjoyable. As an historian, I am also particularly interested in studying the role of contexts of different texts, a skill which is now crucial in the new GCSE and A level curriculum.

Being an experienced teacher and tutor means that I understand the importance of developing a good rapport with students to effectively support them in making excellent progress. I always begin my tutoring sessions by assessing a student’s strengths and areas of improvement, before differentiating and tailoring my teaching and resources depending on a student’s individual needs. I ensure that students are well supported, starting with scaffolded activities, and chunking the learning with easy to remember techniques, to build independence in learning.

I also think it is vital to break down the examiner’s mark scheme and success criteria with students to make sure they have a strong understanding of how to tackle each exam question and the skills they need to demonstrate.

As well as tutoring GCSE and secondary school students, I am also available to tutor KS3 school pupils, A-Level students and adults.

In your trial lesson we will discuss your needs and agree on an action plan to target these. I will then address your targeted areas by planning bespoke lessons for you and provide feedback on your progress and development.
