About me

Hi! I'm Sophie, an undergraduate Architecture student at the University of Bath. Within my chosen university studies I have a passion for design, physics (particularly structural & mechanical) and mathematics. All these three disciplines are integrated into what I would like to eventually be doing in the future... becoming an Architect!

Having grown up in Switzerland and learning the language for 10+ years, German has become a language I love to speak and challenge myself with. I have had the opportunity to study German formally in the classroom, as well hear and speak it everyday in my day to day life... giving me that great combination of a high grammatical understanding as well as how people in the "real world" really speak German.

Apart from lots of design work and drawing to do with my course projects, in my spare time I compete on the University of Bath Ski team.

Questions Sophie has answered

Konjunktionen: wenn oder als?

When talking about your actions, or making plans, the three above words are often mixed up. In English, the word "when" is most commonly used for all three of "wenn, wann and als". Here are some ways to figure out which correct word to use."Wenn" can be specifically translated as "whenever". It is used to describe actions which you have already completed in the past, and that you do regularly/more than once. An example could be "whenever I brush my teeth", or "whenever I take the bus". These would be "Wenn ich meine Zaehne putze" and "Wenn ich mit dem Bus fahre". It is important to remember that you DO NOT use "wenn" when describing a single event which you are recalling. When describing a single event, this is where "als" is used. If you think about a sentence in English and cannot use "whenever" to describe the time frame, it is because you are not talking about a recurring occasion. For example, translating "When he was in year 2, he was scared of animals" would be "Als er in der zweiten Klasse war, hatte er Angst vor Tieren". He was only in year 2 once. Another example - "when I went shopping yesterday" is translated to "Als ich gestern ins Einkauszentrum ging"When talking about your actions, or making plans, the three above words are often mixed up.
