I am an approachable, hardworking, and knowledgeable tutor studying history at the University of Exeter. I have been tutoring for the past year and have helped my students achieve the grades they hoped for and more. I have been passionate about the subject of history from a very young age, and I hope to help my students to see that history can be much more fun and interesting than it is made to seem at school. Throughout my history degree I have studied a very wide range of topics, giving me an excellent knowledge of both what happened throughout history, and also of how to write and talk about it. The history topics that I have the most experience tutoring in, and the most knowledge of, are the Tudors, twentieth century Germany, twentieth century Russia, the Cold War, and American Civil Rights. I am also able to tutor in other areas, especially where the main concern is exam technique. I continually review my notes on these topics to ensure that I remain knowledgeable enough to engage in discussion of them and answer any questions my students may have. As a tutor, one of my main priorities, alongside increasing a student's knowledge, is increasing their confidence. A student who is confident that they have the answers somewhere in their head and that they know what to do in an exam situation will always be more successful than a hesitant student with the same amount of knowledge.

About my sessions

My sessions involve a large amount of discussion, in which I aim to encourage the student to engage critically with the topic in a way that is far more interesting than them just listening to me talk. This is one of the main benefits of 1:1 tutoring, as I am able to devote my time and attention to listening to the way that my student understands the topic and working out how to best explain aspects which they do not understand. This can vary greatly between students, and in the past, I have been successful at modifying my tutoring technique to help each individual student get the most out of the lessons. Through discussion-based lessons, students are able to improve their knowledge of a topic, their ability to engage with it critically, and their confidence in their ability to do both those things. An increase in confidence is one of the major changes which I have seen in many of my students. I also do sessions specifically on the different types of exam questions and the techniques required for them. Many students have massively improved their grades from these sessions, including one who went from a D to an A in his mocks, as his knowledge of the topic was excellent, he was just lacking in exam technique.

Elizabeth Student

Alice is an amazing tutor. She helped my daughter Elizabeth, not only giving her the confidence to enter the exam with a better knowledge of how to answer a question and also with content , she achieved a grade which enabled her , along with other grades, to get offered her first university choice. She is a confident tutor who makes the student feel relaxed and able to ask any questions without feeling silly! The on line format is fantastic. I would highly recommend Alice!!👍😁
