About me

I read Modern & Medieval Languages (French, Spanish, Portuguese) in Trinity Hall, Cambridge and now I am studying for a Masters in International Relations and European Politics in Bath. I have teaching experience, acquired during my Year Abroad in France.

My exam experience in school was perfect: straight A*s, 0 hiccups and smiles all-round. However, university was a completely different ballgame and it was a formative time for me. I developed many techniques for coping with "information overload", weakness/strength identification, study-life balance and effective revision. These are skills I used not only in my own learning for my Bachelors - and in my teaching in France - but continue to use in my Masters.

I am super passionate about University Access. I really want to help pupils to harness their potential and showcase their brilliance.

About my sessions

Every mind works differently, and everyone has different needs, so our first priority will be to evaluate what you need and how I can help you get it. It will also be important to establish which exam board the you're following so that I can best hone the lessons to meet their specific requirements. With University (Oxbridge) mentoring, there will be a big emphasis placed on drive and desire, and I'll help you with personal statements, interview techniques and the general procedure.

Come to me with all your queries, big and small, and we can work through them together. We can look at essays, grammar exercises etc that you have done and if desired, I can design exercises and tests for you to do in your own time for later discussion. Think of this as a way of reassuring yourself of the knowledge gained.

I believe that tutoring is a two-way street: we'll have to strike a perfect balance between instruction and independent thinking. Don't let that frighten you, because it can only ever make you stronger! You will be able to apply knowledge in different contexts: this way, no matter what the exam throws at you, you will know precisely how to take it on!

Questions Ellen has answered

How can I improve my French accent?

EXPOSURE!Listen to French radio (there are plenty of apps for that).Watch French films - if you struggle with comprehension, stick on the French subtitles. If that's still to difficult, turn on the English ones, but always push yourself to catch those pesky phrases that escape you (remember you can pause and rewind!). Find a French conversation buddy. Listen to French music. Christine & The Queens is a personal favourite of mine.Talk to yourself in French, repeating the sentences and phrases you have heard, imitating the way they were spoken by natives.EXPOSURE!Listen to French radio (there are plenty of apps for that).Watch French films - if you struggle with comprehension, stick on the French subtitles.
