About me

I'm Ruby, I am currently studying Philosophy at the University of Edinburgh. Philosophy is the perfect subject, it makes me confused every day and I am constantly reevaluating my ideas. It keeps me questioning what I observe in the world but also teaches you the skills to actually understand how to make sense of it. Studying logic helps to see how language can be simplified to create arguments and proof of claims and studying the history of Western philosophy is helpful in grounding curre...

It keeps me questioning what I observe in the world but also teaches you the skills to actually understand how to make sense of it. Studying logic helps to see how language can be simplified to create arguments and proof of claims and studying the history of Western philosophy is helpful in grounding current philosophical thought. I completed my GCSEs in the UK and then attended United World Colleges Costa Rica, where I took the International Baccalaureate. This means I have experience with both systems of examination and can be helpful in anyone between systems or in each. I applied through UCAS, so am happy to help with any personal statements or interview worries. I also applied to some other European Universities such as SciencesPo in France. At uni I have continued my love of music, singing in choirs and also dancing.

About my sessions

I have done tutoring in the past both for my peers and for other ages. With sciences I try to extract the topic the question we are discussing falls under, then go back and test the student’s understanding on that topic. I will structure my lessons by identifying areas the student is struggling then starting a discussion that helps them develop their ideas. Also providing practice questions or using different types of texts to analyse means students will be more confident when it comes to unseen work in exams. For Literature, I found it useful to create quotation tables and encourage students to frequently identify the literary device used by a quotation and be able to explain why this was used. Structure of lessons: the first part will be reviewing the past week, ensuring that there are no further gaps in their knowledge. Then we will move onto new content, either helping the student with their current work, or tackling a topic in the syllabus. I will leave time for a discussion of the topic that goes beyond the syllabus, grasping a theory and encouraging them to review that during the week by further investigating. I think that improvement is shown by the students confidence and enjoyment of the course, and an increased ability to answer questions quickly and effectively. This also means students will be more engaged so will be more likely to study more on their own.
