About me

I have a slightly unique background as a mature student. I didn't have a lot of confidence in high school and wasn't really sure what I wanted to do with my life and originally studied journalism. When I was 23 I decided to get back into education and really follow my passions in biology and conservation. I love my subject and I've found that the more I've studied it, the more I've loved it. In the future I want to bring my two areas of study together and work in science communication and science literacy.

I feel that I have a really good insight into the struggles and worries that go into studying biology subjects, and I've gone through a lot of those difficulties over the past few years myself, beginning with a long-distance course in which I had to figure out a way to teach myself brand new material.

I'm a part of my universities Townsend Society for commuting students, Lifers committee and, of course, the Biology Society. And I'm incredibly lucky to study by the seaside and get to go on adventures around the coast and countryside.

About my sessions

On first meeting a student I want to get a feel for where they are and what they're looking for so that I can best meet them where they're at. I will structure lessons depending on this information and what I think will work best for each student.

I want to make sure that at the start and end of each lesson we review the material that we've just/ last gone over to make sure I'm answering any questions they might have and to make sure that all the material stays fresh in their mind. At the end of the lessons we can also discuss any practice homework or questions that may be useful for the student to complete between lessons.

I find that visual cues are incredibly important in learning, especially in a subject like biology where there are many diagrams, and therefore the white board is a brilliant learning tool to simplify and break down complicated information.

I understand that lack of confidence can really get in the way of learning and enjoying the subject, so I also believe that a really important part of tutoring is building confidence in a shame free zone. There are no stupid questions or worries here because I've almost certainly felt the exact same way myself in the past.

I'm really passionate about science education and I want to make sure I create an environment in our lessons that gives the best learning experience possible all-round.
