About me

I am a friendly and patient person with great attention to detail. I chose to study History, Politics and Economics at university as I find all three subjects very interesting and believe that they cannot be studied in isolation in order to understand them properly. The degree focuses on Russia and Eastern Europe, which I find very appealing as I grew up in Moscow. Furthermore, after doing 6 subjects for the International Baccalaureate (IB), I could not see myself studying just one discipline...

Furthermore, after doing 6 subjects for the International Baccalaureate (IB), I could not see myself studying just one discipline at university. At university, apart from studying, I sing in the symphony chorus and chamber choir. I've been playing the piano for 9 years, which has taught me the importance of practice and organization.

Having taken GCSEs and IB, I have a good understanding of the pressure that students in England face when preparing for exams. From revising for my exams, I've learnt the importance of doing as many past papers as possible instead of spending a lot of time making notes. In addition, exam preparation taught me the importance of understanding concepts rather than simply learning them by heart as understanding allowed me to remember the concepts better and to be able to apply them in different situations. Therefore, my two main strategies to help students improve would be making sure that they really understand the concept and that they do as many past papers as possible.

About my sessions

When formulating a strategy for a particular student I would take their level and their end goal into consideration. Having said this, I will generally follow the following strategy.

When formulating a strategy for a particular student I would take their level and their end goal into consideration. Having said this, I will generally follow the following strategy.

Before the first lesson, I would ask the student for the exam board of their exam. I would then familiarize myself with the syllabus, and ask the student to go through the syllabus and highlight each topic using a traffic light system: red for difficult, yellow for 'there are bits that I'm not sure about' and green for easy.

I would start each lesson with an explanation of a topic (at first it will be a 'red' topic, then once there is a solid understanding of 'red' topics I will move on to 'yellow' topics). Then I will give some short exercises to practice and fully understand the topic. Then I will give the student some past paper questions, some of which would be done during the tutorial and some of them would be done in the student's spare time to make sure that he or she really understands the concept.

Each month (the frequency might be varied depending on the time left before the exam), I would ask the student to do a complete past paper under timed conditions and to go through the syllabus using the 'traffic light' system in order to monitor their progress.

For higher achieving students I would be happy to go slightly beyond the syllabus if they wish to make the lessons more challenging.
