Hello! My name is Maariya and I’m a 4th year medical student at the University of Nottingham. Although the challenging nature of this field has tested me on numerous occasions, I strive to succeed and truly appreciate the honour of positively impacting patients’ health. Being taught by consultants/ professors and teaching fellows during my placements has highlighted the importance of continued teaching and sharing knowledge within medicine.

I too have adopted a nurturing approach when it comes to supporting peers in pre-clinical years, prospective university students via the Widening Access to Medical School society as well as through voluntary work with the Widening Participation team; where I mentor students aged 11-16 in academic/social aspects to help them achieve their goals.

As a former tutor at Kumon (tuition center) as well as an online Maths mentor throughout sixth form, I have vast experience in tutoring. My patience, excellent communication as well as adaptability to work with students with various academic abilities prepares me well as a tutor.

My passion for the subject and experience of teaching it make me suited to tutor students requiring support with Maths at GCSE level/below. My volunteering experiences and work as a student ambassador for my university have enabled me to set up mock interviews for medicine, provide guidance with personal statements and the application process which I would gladly mentor students for.

About my sessions

As a tutor I adopt a collaborative approach with my students to structure the sessions so that they gain the most they can from the allocated time. Having a basic structure to the session is very helpful, however flexibility to accommodate any extra topics the student may want to cover or extra time spent on one area more than the other is very important; I endeavor to cater my tutoring style to the student I work with.

The general structure to my sessions will include recaps of the previous session at the start and summaries of what has been taught towards the end. Establishing learning objectives at the beginning for the session will be useful to ensure all areas of concern are addressed. Informal quizzes/practice questions at the end enables me to assess whether the student has been able to accomplish the objectives and feels confident in what has been covered in the session.

For me personally, when it comes to exams I revise most effectively with a mix of independent and group style revision. Creating posters/flashcards/using online tools have been fundamental to my revision strategies. When it comes to Maths specifically, repetition and lots of practice questions were key. I have learnt many revision tips over the years and would love to share with students. My organised/ hardworking nature together with my willingness to think outside the box to come up with suitable teaching techniques for each student will ensure my success as a tutor.

Learnt a lot through today's session. She helped go through practice questions of volume and surface areas of spheres, cuboid and cylinder. Also gave me a clearer insight on future choices so which routes are available, advice and own experience with her career and what options i have. Really nice and approachable, answered all my questions. Thank you.
