About me

Hello! I am a Durham University Law School student and I am currently going into the second year of my studies. After having worked hard in my exams and come in the top 10% of my year, I have decided to empower younger students to do the same- understand their potential and push themselves to reach their goals, no matter their background. Hello! I am a Durham University Law School student and I am currently going into the second year of my studies. After having worked hard in my exams and come in the top 10% of my year, I have decided to empower younger students to do the same- understand their potential and push themselves to reach their goals, no matter their background. I have achieved A*s in both GCSE and A level French and English Literature, and I would like to pass on my knowledge and understanding of those subjects; a nuanced approach that may not be taught in a conventional classroom environment. Besides from academics, my approach has developed from running my own debating society at university within my college, as well as playing badminton. Within both I learned how to inspire other people to understand the debate or the game by looking to what they can contribute. I believe what makes me stand out as a tutor is creating an environment where I am not merely teaching how to pass an exam, but how to love the subject, and identify the areas that 'speak' to my tutee. After all, I have found that knowing the material is only 50% of the job- the rest is having a deeper understanding that only comes after removing the 'block' of believing yourself to be 'not good enough' or simply not liking the subject. In short, I am here to not only guide the student to success, but also to satisfaction.

About my sessions

FRENCH

My experience of language teaching in the UK has been excessively mechanical. Some of my friends had come out of an oral presentation at GCSE and said they had no clue what they were saying, because they had prepared for an exam and not to actually have a conversation.  My experience of language teaching in the UK has been excessively mechanical. Some of my friends had come out of an oral presentation at GCSE and said they had no clue what they were saying, because they had prepared for an exam and not to actually have a conversation. To do well in an exam, and to maintain an ability long after GCSE, a much more organic way of teaching should be employed; that is to say primarily focussed on speaking, while incorporating grammatical correction, then moving onto writing once the 'flavour' of the words has been sampled. THe key is not to over-load the tutee with unnecessary grammatical theory or over-correction, allowing them to learn naturally as a native would.

ENGLISH LITERATURE

The first step I would take in teaching is making sure I am well acquainted with the requirements of the exam board. However, my primary goal would be to develop my tutees analysis ability and understanding of the texts- artificially teaching the points they need to hit in order to attain a certain grade would not allow them to reach the upper levels of the highest grade. You need to live and breathe the text. A substantiated opinion only comes with having a genuine interest in the themes explored. As well as this, knowing and understanding points of significance within the text having read the opinion of critics would invite a much deeper and more thoughtful analysis.
