About me

Hi, I’m Megan and I study English and Modern History (1400-present) at St. Andrews University. I have a passion for theatre, so I have focused my honours-level English studies on playwrights and performance in the Renaissance and contemporary periods. I achieved 95% in my Higher English, and an A band 1 grade at Advanced Higher too. I studied the poetry of Carol Ann Duffy and two short stories in fifth-year. The following year, I looked at the poetry of Seamus Heaney, two Shakespeare plays, and studied two novels for my sixth-year dissertation. I’m therefore experienced in analysing, interpreting and responding to a range of different texts and would be happy to help students develop these skills.

I came top of my year for History at both Higher and Advanced Higher, and I am keenly fascinated by most historical periods (my favourite TV programme growing up was Horrible Histories!). I can help students to better examine and determine the usefulness of primary and secondary sources, use evidence effectively and develop clear analysis which meets the demands of any given essay question.

In my spare time, I like to be involved in as much theatre as possible, and enjoy going to singing lessons. This semester, I will be performing in a Roman comedy with the Latin society, and Little Women the Musical.

About my sessions

I will focus on whichever area of study or skills the student feels needs most improving on. In my case, I struggled a lot with completing questions while writing under time-pressure, and structuring my revision so that I learned enough, but not so much that I burned out. These are problems which can be solved by developing good study methods and having a clear idea of how to approach specific tasks.

Therefore, I will spend the first lesson chatting to the student so that I understand what they would personally like to get out of sessions, then plan activities and tasks accordingly. I will also use the SQA’s marking criteria as a guide, and ask for feedback they are getting from teachers and practice exams, to determine which approach is best to help students move forward. Ultimately, however, what we do during sessions is completely dependent on each person’s individual needs. Whether you would like to be taught to how write effective study notes, develop your exam technique, write and structure a successful essay, or simply receive some feedback, I’m here to help!

My son is finding Megan very helpful. Taken the time to discuss what he wants from the lessons working at his pace and explaining the topics well.
