About me

Having been through the whole process of school examinations, I know how stressful and daunting the can be in the run up to taking them. What helped me get through this was employing effective learning techniques and asking peers but when these two options don’t solve an issue, tutoring was and is the best way to help cover up holes in our understanding of a subject. And this is where I come in. Having experience tutoring students at the 11 plus, GCSE and A-level stage I’ve helped them achieve their goals, be it getting into their target school or attaining their ideal grades. I did this through not only explaining the required syllabus content but also teaching exam technique and how to think independently.

As a second year student at Durham University studying Physics and Astronomy, the subjects of Physics and Maths fascinate me. It truly is the study of how and why everything happens so being able to study the mechanics of a phenomenon and explaining it gives a great deal of satisfaction. Particularly in the field of Astronomy and Particle Physics, which is the subject of some of the most exciting research in the world.

About my sessions

When we start out our first lesson, I will run a short assessment of the student’s understanding of the subject. This will help me find the areas they need help on and thus to plan the future lessons. I would then use the following lessons to help firm up their foundations in the subject and work with them to build confidence in explaining concepts. When we start out our first lesson, I will run a short assessment of the student’s understanding of the subject. This will help me find the areas they need help on and thus to plan the future lessons. I would then use the following lessons to help firm up their foundations in the subject and work with them to build confidence in explaining concepts. The lessons would go as follows: We would spend the first 30 minutes learning a specific, pre-set topic and then the next 20 minutes after that doing practice problems. I would solve two problems and then guide the student through solving some themselves. The last ten minutes will allow me to recap on what has been covered that lesson and for any feedback to be given from the student on what they would like to work on in the future. The learning techniques that worked the best for me were flash cards and doing many past paper questions because they involved using active recall, which is scientifically proven to reinforce neural pathways. Whichever way to implement active recall works best for the student is what I would recommend most.
