About me

Hey, I’m Arif. I study biochemistry at The University of Warwick. Biology is all around us, inside of us and is us. From the extreme micro, dealing with atoms and chemical compounds, all the way up to the entire world in topics such as epidemiology. They say chemistry is the language of biology and to an extent that is very true, I enjoy taking chemistry as it delves deeper into the workings of biology and it allows me to have a better understanding of biological concepts as a whole. That’s why for me biochemistry is the perfect degree; a blend of biology and chemistry.

A bit more about what I like to do in my free time; I play the Cello and Piano and I love

to play jazz. I’ve done Thai boxing for the last 5 years and will continue to

do so as it keeps both my body and mind in shape, and finally, I play

competitive chess, online and in a club. I find that it really exercises both

sides of the brain, it is a very creative game that is also very logistical.

About my sessions

When it comes to structuring a lesson, I need to understand what the student wants and more importantly how the student learns. Everyone learns differently, and I will tailor the way I give information according to that. For example; visual learners learn with diagrams and pictures, auditory learners, however, learn with speech, and I will have to adjust according to that.

Second, I’ll be setting learning objectives which are small

detailed descriptions of what students will be able to do or what they will know

after the session is complete. It is my role as a tutor to help students

understand how to use the information they will learn during the lesson in a

practical way.

Finally, Learning must be dynamic. I encourage students to

question and share ideas during the session. I prepare small exam question

quizzes and ask the student quick questions throughout the session to keep

their attention levels up. I also feel that students need to be exposed to more

exam style questions because it all boils down to the final exam, and if the

student hasn’t encountered the question styles and is confused in the moment,

then all the previous learning goes to waste.

Questions Arif has answered

What are the differences between DNA and RNA

There are 4 main differences, the first being that DNA is in a double helix structure much like two pieces of string wrapped together. RNA, on the other hand, is single-stranded. The second difference is in the pentose sugar that both of the two structures have. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) contains the sugar deoxyribose and Ribonucleic acid (RNA) contains the sugar ribose. One of the 4 base pairs also differs in RNA - Cytosine and Guanine are common in both, however in RNA, Adenine bonds to the base Uracil instead of Thymine in DNA. Apart from structural differences they also have functional differences; DNA codes for proteins inside an organism. RNA has a variety of purposes, some of which include; messengers (mRNA), protein builders (tRNA)There are 4 main differences, the first being that DNA is in a double helix structure much like two pieces of string wrapped together.
