I have a passion for teaching and have always tutored others throughout my time at University so I've had a good experience with exams and coursework. I use a strategic way of revision and learning: I always think about the end goal (an exam/coursework). This really helps students not to get overwhelmed with tons of information and ideas - as is often the case with Spanish, Media Studies and English Literature!

I teach with the exam in mind, practicing exam structures, organising information, and linking theories or ideas to really understand in depth! Tutorials are not school, it is time for students to go over whatever they need at the pace that is right for them and I really encourage my tutees to be honest about how they find their topic so I can make the session personal to their learning and understanding. I don't believe a 'one fits all' approach, there has to be a level of adaptability and fun, because you're much more likely to learn when you're enjoying it!

About my sessions

I think tutoring should always be personalised, so I'd ask for some prior indication of what they want to go over for me to prepare a lesson, resources and examples which can help them outside of our session

Example lesson structure:

Doubts or questions

Go through homework or schoolwork

Explore chosen subject

Go through some exam questions & how to answer them

Recap and ‘moving forward’ plan

I’ve always found visual aids helpful, so I’d create resources for the student to take away and apply to their work; visuals, pictures & colours can be more effective than just notes when it comes to revision. In terms of progress, subjects like Spanish are easier to measure with mini tests - where there’s mostly a right/wrong answer. But with essay subjects like Media and English Literature, progress is harder to define. I strongly believe that a students’ confidence when discussing a topic is a good indicator of their progress. I always found that toward the end of a module I'd really start to enjoy it as all my knowledge came together and things started to make sense. Therefore I think taking the pressure off measuring “progress” and instead focusing on building confidence and interest in the subject is more beneficial for the long term success of the student.

I was very lucky to have been recommended by my BIL of this site that too came at the very last minute to the exam but quality of support my daughter got from both the teachers were simply outstanding. Both the teachers were Flexible, professional, friendly and very effective. My daughter came back with a simile from both the exams. I will recommend them with confidence and thank you teachers. I highly recommend Eleanor (Ellie). She is very encouraging and thorough. My son really struggled with Media studies, getting to grips with the theory and applying it. Ellie has been a fantastic help explaining theory, applying it to questions. Thanks Ellie.

My son goes to Ellie for Media studies. He says Ellie is very organised, knowledgeable and understands the difficulties he has getting to grips with the subject, especially the theory. I feel very relieved to have Ellie’s support! Thank you.

Eleanor teaches in a way that the student can fully understand while also challenging what the student knows.
