About me

I am in my second year at Durham University studying an undergraduate degree in economics. This desire to study economics stems from my love of current affairs, topical debate and the application of mathematics to real-life situations. Studying economics has allowed me to start understanding how events in the global economy impact on people’s lives, including my own. Undertaking a research project on the EU was my favourite area of study at A-Level as it allowed me to weigh up all the content...

This desire to study economics stems from my love of current affairs, topical debate and the application of mathematics to real-life situations. Studying economics has allowed me to start understanding how events in the global economy impact on people’s lives, including my own. Undertaking a research project on the EU was my favourite area of study at A-Level as it allowed me to weigh up all the contentious issues and make a judgement on Brexit. Mathematics also plays a huge role in economics and one of the main reasons I chose economics as it brings two of my favourite subjects together.

At college I took the full mathematics A-Level in my first year achieving an A*. In my second year I achieved A*AB in further mathematics, economics and business respectively. I applied to Cambridge University and was successful at obtaining an interview but unfortunately did not receive an offer. My four other University choices were Durham, Leeds, Nottingham and Warwick.

I am a regular member of Durham University's Women in Business Society and regularly attend networking events with companies such as Bank of America, Barclays and Oliver Wyman. I have also recently been accepted for a mentoring scheme within the society which I very much look forward to.

About my sessions

For economics I think the best method would be to choose different topic areas which a student is struggling with and work on these one by one. This method worked well for me when revising for economics exams. Firstly I will work on understanding the basic content and use real world examples to deepen understanding. I then propose we have a quick test in order to track progress and understanding of the topic and pin point any areas which need further improvement. Lastly I think it would be he...

This method worked well for me when revising for economics exams. Firstly I will work on understanding the basic content and use real world examples to deepen understanding. I then propose we have a quick test in order to track progress and understanding of the topic and pin point any areas which need further improvement. Lastly I think it would be helpful to look at some exam questions for the topic and work on exam techniques.

For mathematics again I think the best method would be to pinpoint topics the student is struggling with and run through these one by one. I aim to begin by explaining the method and then to move on to example questions. I believe the best way of learning maths is by practicing and this is certainly the reason I achieved so high in my examinations.

This being said I am very flexible and open to new ideas therefore if a student feels a different approach would be better I will do my best to adopt a different teaching style and lesson structure.
