I have always been faced with the dilemma of having interests in a variety of different subjects. When beginning A-levels, I took maths, R.E, art and chemistry. These are all subjects that may seem conflicting; how can the logical precision of maths combine with the creativity of fine art? However, philosophy has enabled me to think deeply and further my interests in all of these subject areas.

Within my philosophy course, I am taking a module in the philosophy of art which allows me to consider things like forgery and the aesthetic status of a forge. I am also completing a logic module which engages my maths skills and clear reasoning. Philosophy enables me to critically analyse arguments and to be clear and concise in my reasoning, a skill which is very important in maths. Being methodical in your working means you are able to break down any complex question and answer it. I also understand that every individual learns and works differently, my background in both the sciences, humanities and arts gives me the ability to help anyone, of any ability and that is what I aim to do!

About my sessions

I personally believe that one of the most important thing about learning maths, especially in a one-on-one environment, is the pupil's engagement through asking questions. I aim to focus each session around the student's individual needs and this will come directly from the pupils confidence in asking me questions. This will help me to focus my attention to the student's main areas of difficulty, so that I can re-explain and help them to grasp the concepts fully.

I like to help students through the use of exam questions and worked examples. This helps me to follow their thought process and pinpoint the areas that they are experiencing difficulty. Often, it is the case that a student may only find one aspect of a question difficult and this can prevent them from completing the question. I will be able to spot this mistake and help them to understand and overcome the aspect that they find challenging. This will also help the student get in good practice for being clear and concise when answering an exam paper.

Harry has recently completed his first lesson with Rebecca. It is the first time I have ever seen him buzzing about learning; at the end of his session with her he had literally grown inches! She has just emailed me a summary of the session which was honest and postive and matched his feedback to me. Our decision to employ a tutor is not just about helping our son get through his GCSEs, it's also about helping him grow as a learner. It seems Rebecca has the skills, patience, kindness and maturity to help him where the school system has so often failed. I could not be happier after one session. I suspect I am going to owe this young woman a huge debt in gratitude.
