About me

Hi there! My name is Ella I’m 21 and I’m a third year English student at the University of Exeter! Exeter is ranked 5th for English and over the past three years I have gained a wealth of knowledge in both Literature and Language from some of the top professors in the country. Exeter is ranked 5th for English and over the past three years I have gained a wealth of knowledge in both Literature and Language from some of the top professors in the country. I specialise in Renaissance Literature, namely Shakespeare (which I know every GCSE and A Level student will have to study!) and Film Studies. However I also have experience with Chaucer and other Medieval literature, Early 20th Century Literature and poetry.

I am currently the General Secretary for English Society and this is a position that is highly rewarding. Not only do I help younger years with their studies, I also help them become acquainted with all aspects of Uni life, for example finding their way around campus, making friends and helping them getting in contact with people in the department. This has helped me to become a responsible and helpful individual who is friendly and approachable.

I have experience in learning how to cater to mark schemes across a number of examination boards (I have taken AQA and OCR exams but I also have experience tutoring Edexcel) and how to hit those all important assessment objectives! I have tutored a family friend in English for two years and I helped him get his grade from a ‘5’ prediction to him actually achieving an ‘8’ in his English Lit GCSE. This was a really rewarding experience that made me want to tutor more Students!

About my sessions

The first session will most likely consist of finding out what texts the student is studying and with what exam board. This is important because different exam boards have different assessment objectives and mark schemes and learning how to cater to these mark schemes and AO’s is key to getting the top grades.

The first session will most likely consist of finding out what texts the student is studying and with what exam board. This is important because different exam boards have different assessment objectives and mark schemes and learning how to cater to these mark schemes and AO’s is key to getting the top grades.

Breaking down the texts will consist of looking specifically at these AO’s. We will look at key quotes and analysing the language, and also at contexts. We will break the text down further by looking at themes and characters separately, as exam questions are usually structured around a theme or character. I will also be checking student’s spelling and grammar as some exam boards will take marks off responses if they feel that spelling and grammar isn’t sufficient.

To ascertain progress, I will be using past papers and practice questions that the students will respond to and that I will mark alongside the exam board’s mark scheme to make sure the student is hitting those specific AO’s. I will also be checking how the student’s confidence builds as the sessions continue and whether they are offering responses to questions that I pose during the sessions. It isn’t enough for me to simply lecture the student with my knowledge of English and the specific texts that they are studying, I want to see them engage enthusiastically with the content and be willing to contribute their own opinions and analysis.
