About me

I studied at Durham University for a BA in English Literature (2016) and an MA in Twentieth and Twenty-First Century Literature (2017). In 2018, I withdrew from a DPhil in English Literature at the University of Oxford due to an insurmountable funding deficit and have since began working in publishing.

In 2018, I withdrew from a DPhil in English Literature at the University of Oxford due to an insurmountable funding deficit and have since began working in publishing.

While at school, I began fostering a love for American literature and post-war British literature. This grew during my time at Durham, before I refined my research interests to American fiction of the Twentieth Century, which I studied during my time at Oxford. That said, my knowledge of literature is broad in its scope and there a few periods that I haven't studied, with my familiarity of canonical authors being particularly high.

Areas of English Literature that I have expertise in include, but are not restricted to: American literature (fiction, drama, poetry), post-war British literature (fiction, drama, poetry), Shakespeare, the Victorian period, the Metaphyiscal poets, Renaissance literature (fiction, drama, poetry), short fiction, and Irish literature (fiction, drama, poetry).

I can also help with personal statements, having applied for universities in the UK — both Oxford and Cambridge — Ireland, the USA, and Hong Kong.

About my sessions

I aim to look at texts/extracts/passages as a complete unit, placing them in a cultural and historical context. Following this, I will analyse the piece closely and unpack the rhetorical layers such as imagery and symbolism. Once this has been completed, it becomes easier to evaluate the work based on these two poles, getting a sense of how the general and specific aspects combine.

I think encouraging an enthusiasm for literature is the most important aspect of tutoring in this field. Works studied in school often seem inaccessible and unrelatable for adolescents — particular those written centuries before — and tackling these two hurdles by encouraging a genuine interest in the piece will facilitate the learning process.

As we progress in our sessions, I will compile a check-list of the major things to look for in analysis and will work with my student so that they are soon able to identify the majority of these features independently.
