About me

Hi! I'm Eileen and I'm a second year student at Cambridge doing French and Spanish literature and language. Hi! I'm Eileen and I'm a second year student at Cambridge doing French and Spanish literature and language. I find my degree fascinating, particularly the cultural aspects, and I have enjoyed travelling to Spanish and French speaking countries. I spent 2 weeks in Guatemala volunteering in schools and worked as a nanny in Madrid for a month giving one-on-one English lessons to the children. I spent 6 weeks this summer working for a private tutoring company in Hong Kong giving individual and small group lessons, so I am experienced with language learning strategies and planning engaging lessons.

Having gone through the Cambridge interview process, I'd be happy to help with all stages from shaping the personal statement to interview preparation and strategies.

I personally find it fascinating to explore the culture of Spanish and French speaking countries, and I would hope to make my lessons engaging by discussing this in addition to covering aspects of grammar and vocabulary. This year I have been learning Portuguese as a beginner so I am familiar with the challenges of language learning and would be patient, friendly and eager to help you succeed.

About my sessions

I believe that the best way to learn a language is through immersion, so I would encourage my students to speak in the target language for as much of the lesson as possible. This is a strategy that I would adjust according to the student's level, but I think that it goes a long way towards increasing confidence, pronunciation and fluency.

I believe that the best way to learn a language is through immersion, so I would encourage my students to speak in the target language for as much of the lesson as possible. This is a strategy that I would adjust according to the student's level, but I think that it goes a long way towards increasing confidence, pronunciation and fluency.

I would largely base the lessons around articles which cover an interesting topic, and alongside linguistic skills we would discuss interesting topics such as the history, food, culture and current affairs of the target country. We would use articles to prompt comprehension exercises and discussion, and I would encourage my students to read articles between sessions and bring these to discuss as long with any grammar issues which have arisen.

I would focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking, and during my A Levels I built up a bank of useful phrases and colloquialisms which I would gradually introduce to make the student's speaking more natural. Ultimately, I hope to create a fun and relaxed environment where my student is comfortable to ask questions, and to plan sessions that are engaging and interesting for us both based on the individual needs of each student.
