About me

Hi my name's Matt, I'm a first year medical student at the University of Liverpool. I chose to study medicine following a couple of weeks of work experience I carried out in a hospital, as I learnt about the intricate science of the human body as well as the massive positive impact being a good doctor has on peoples' lives. I went to Nottingham High School for all of my secondary education where I studied

Biology Psychology and Chemistry for A-Level (achieving A*A*A respectively) and was the Chairman of the Nottingham High School Medical society. One of my biggest passions Is music, which fills a lot of time when I'm not inlectures or in the library. I play the guitar, piano and sing in various groups, which I really enjoy and would encourage others to try! Another one of my hobbies is sport. I play hockey a few times a week and love to watch rugby and Formula 1. Whilst I was at school, I spent 4 years as a sergeant in an army cadet unit and am in the process of joining the Officer Training Corps at University, so as you can imagine, I have lots of experience in both teaching and leading pupils of all ages. I look forward to utilising my past teaching experiences and combining them with my detailed scientific knowledge, in order to lead lessons which are informative, useful and above all else, enjoyable. I can't wait to work with you!

Learning is a very active process which requires both the student and teacher to work together in a friendly environment where the learner is not afraid to ask questions. It is for this reason that I try to lead my lessons in an interactive and enjoyable way. Prior to the session I will collate various documents and revision materials to enhance the learning both during and after the lesson. I pride myself on being versatile, which is a skill that is useful when teaching others, as I can tailor the lesson based upon the students learning style/current knowledge. During the lesson, I will start by introducing the topic area and find out the current depth of knowledge, so as to not waste time going over the aspects of the topic that the student already understands. Following this, we will both work through the information together by discussing and annotating on the interactive whiteboard. I will regularly check that the student understands the details and give them many opportunities to ask questions. At the end of the lesson, we will summarise the information covered with summary questions to test understanding. I will finally ask students which parts of the lesson they found useful and which parts they didn’t, so that I can try and use their feedback to make the next lesson better for them. I will briefly begin the following lesson with a few exam-style questions to test knowledge from the previous lesson.
