About me

The power of literature to open up the reader's eyes and make them aware to things completely new, but simultaneously allow them to recognise their own inner feelings written down in front of them on a page, is what I love about studying English. Literature allows escapism but also acts as a comfort blanket in assuring you, often when you least expect it, that your own thoughts and desires are the same as others in completely different societies, in completely different periods of history...

Literature allows escapism but also acts as a comfort blanket in assuring you, often when you least expect it, that your own thoughts and desires are the same as others in completely different societies, in completely different periods of history. As a qualified Nanny and previous tennis coach I have invested a lot of time into making sure I'm patient, understanding and have good communication skills. Literature creeps into every single aspect of life and that's why I'm passionate about helping my students improve their analytical and creative skills, largely due to their transferability. Literature is something I truly enjoy and so this will be reflected in my teaching as I hope my students too can see it as less of a challenge and more of an adventure.

About my sessions

English isn't a quantifiable subject so there are a lot of different activities I would want to use in my lessons to make sure we tackle it from all angles. Here are some ideas:

Memory test of key techniques (e.g. rhetorical questions) and their definitions.

Memory test of key techniques (e.g. rhetorical questions) and their definitions.

Get the student to summarise the book or piece of literature we are looking at to check they understand the plot!

Unseen prose or poetry - the student & I work together to form an argument about an unseen passage.

Close reading of the text - together we look at a specific description or section of a poem and pick out the key words, explore their meaning and identify devices used.

Creative writing tasks.

Persuasive writing tasks: creating adverts or pretending to write letters etc.

Progress will be continuously measured and evident by comparing the student's change in writing style and analytical abilities with every session. Rewards are a good incentive to encourage learning and also finding what the student likes. I would try and direct the lessons to their particular interests, say they particularly like war poetry or books about adventure, I would try and use these as examples to develop their skills whilst still catering for the literature on their curriculum.
