About me

I'm currently studying English at Cambridge, and that's because of a passion for learning about language and literature. I've always loved reading books and, later, analysing them, but the school curriculum isn't always the most inspiring place to do that. I hope in my lessons to show that even within the limits of a prescriptive and exam-focussed course of study, reading, writing, analysis, and interpretation can still be really fun, inspiring, and valuable in terms of qualif...

I'm currently studying English at Cambridge, and that's because of a passion for learning about language and literature. I've always loved reading books and, later, analysing them, but the school curriculum isn't always the most inspiring place to do that. I hope in my lessons to show that even within the limits of a prescriptive and exam-focussed course of study, reading, writing, analysis, and interpretation can still be really fun, inspiring, and valuable in terms of qualifications but also life more broadly. Exam-technique is a pain, but it's a learnable skill which I'll be teaching without limiting and reducing lessons to box-ticking exercises. The support I received for my GCSEs, admissions test, and A levels was for the most part phenomenal: mentoring and tutoring is one of the single biggest determiners of success, so I'm really motivated and excited to help other people get that same support and hopefully absorb my love of my subject.

About my sessions

I'm really keen to provide tailored tutoring which doesn't just cover content or go over what's already been taught, but adapts delivery and content to the needs of the pupil. I'll begin by honing in on what a student really needs help with or would like to focus on, helping them to self-identify areas which need more work. I'll have regular discussions and feedback with students to see what's working for them and what's not, and encourage honesty, sharing, and sug...

I'm really keen to provide tailored tutoring which doesn't just cover content or go over what's already been taught, but adapts delivery and content to the needs of the pupil. I'll begin by honing in on what a student really needs help with or would like to focus on, helping them to self-identify areas which need more work. I'll have regular discussions and feedback with students to see what's working for them and what's not, and encourage honesty, sharing, and suggestion. I'll break down larger goals into weekly targets, working in dialogue with pupils to measure and accelerate improvement. Each lesson will be structured differently according to the subject, content, and skill areas, but will follow a basic pattern of a balance between straight teaching, listening and feedback, and collaborative task completion and discussion.

Jess is a very friendly tutor. Her lessons are fun and interactive, yet productive and wholesome. I've learnt new literary terminology and concepts, and she gives me insightful and helpful ideas for my essays. I feel very confident to write up an essay after planning and discussing it with her in the lesson. :)
