About me

Hi everyone, my name is Dan and I recently graduated with a degree in law from the University of Oxford! Whilst I had never studied law before university, during my degree I developed a passion for discussing anything legal! I particularly enjoy looking at the issues of policy behind legal doctrine, in addition to the social implications of adopting particular laws, but would love to help out with any queries you have.

Aside from my degree I play a lot of sport, including football, cricket, badminton and chess. At university I played for teams in those sports, and also was Vice-President of the law society at my college. I also helped out with the Access program for applicants to Oxford.

When I was younger I helped tutor young children as part of a community action scheme for many years, and so I hopefully can use this experience to help you with any of your questions or problems! In addition to law, I also have experience with the LNAT, having taken it myself. I also am ideally suited to help with any Oxbridge application inquiries you may have, as in addition to going through it myself I helped run interviews for applicants in my second year. I therefore can give you an insight of the experience you will have during your time visiting Oxford or Cambridge for interview, and hopefully alleviate any worries or nerves you may have!

About my sessions

Tutorials should be tailored to meet the student's needs, and so discussing with the student any preference they have as to the session is vital. However, in general I believe that, rather than the tutor just talk, the student should be encouraged to participate and develop opinions. This facilitates greater understanding, and allows the student to develop his own original thoughts (this can make you stand out in an exam!). I would therefore propose the following structure to a session.

(1) I propose to firstly set out a presentation on the basics of the relevant topic. (2) I will then ask if you have particular queries about what I have said, or about anything you have read separately in your own time. We can therefore explore these questions to make sure you have a sufficiently thorough understanding. (3) If you do not have any particular areas you want to discuss, I will then pick out areas that I believe are critical, also keeping in mind what is likely to appear on an exam. We can develop knowledge and understanding through general discussion and me proposing questions to see what the student thinks in response. (4) Finally, we can tie in the general discussion with past paper questions. This allows us to analyse a subject in a manner you will have to in exam conditions. Here we can also look at exam technique. At the end of the session, dependent on the topic, I may be able to provide you with notes summarising what we have discussed.
