About me

I am currently studying for a Bsc in Biochemistry at university. For me, trying to understand the individual chemical reactions and building blocks that make whole organisms work is fascinating, and the potential applications of our knowledge are very exciting. In school I enjoyed many subjects at GCSE level, and it was only through my Biology and Chemistry A-levels and by carrying out independent research into epigenetics - something I had never heard of before - for my EPQ that I decided to...

For me, trying to understand the individual chemical reactions and building blocks that make whole organisms work is fascinating, and the potential applications of our knowledge are very exciting. In school I enjoyed many subjects at GCSE level, and it was only through my Biology and Chemistry A-levels and by carrying out independent research into epigenetics - something I had never heard of before - for my EPQ that I decided to pursue Biochemistry.

I would therefore love to pass on my interest in science but equally understand that for many students getting a certain grade in their GCSE Chemistry or Biology is a priority. Having taken GCSE exams myself, I have a good understanding of the exam system and appreciate that the sheer number of GCSEs can be daunting and that the marking process can seem arbitrary. My aim is to demystify this exam process and help students develop efficient and self-aware learning habits, that will be really useful for their future, as well as current, studies.

About my sessions

After deciding on what the student wants to get out of the sessions, I will initially focus on any specific concerns they have or any questions from their lessons in school. I can then expand sessions to cover other areas of the syllabus and help with revision, if wanted.

In a session I will generally start by explaining a particular topic, using common examples given in exams, before summarising the key information. I will work closely with the official specification (provided by each exam board), and as exam technique is crucial to higher marks, particularly at GCSE level, I will use past paper questions on a regular basis. This practice will encourage students to use key words and to express themselves articulately to the examiner. Equally importantly, it will make students more comfortable applying their knowledge, as students tend to panic in exam questions despite often having the necessary knowledge.
