About me

Hello! My name is Jared and I am a third-year Biology student at the University of Bristol. I have thoroughly enjoyed the subject from when I was at secondary school to my time at university. As an Integrated-Masters student, I have been through three years’ worth of university-level lecture courses, so I am particularly well versed in the foundation blocks we learn at GCSE and A Level. I have also been working recently on several lab-based projects which help apply the concepts we cover at all levels to real-life experiments and studies. I hold a Level 3 Award in Education and Training which has really helped me understand the learning and teaching process for individuals in post-16 education.

It is so important to have a comprehensive understanding of your subject when it comes to exams, especially at GCSE and A Level. Whilst knowing the basics will help you pass, the more relevant knowledge you know the more likely you will be able to achieve an amazing mark. This is key to my sessions, making sure that we help develop you so that you have not only the key knowledge in order to pass, but also developing your knowledge so you can be fantastic and the best you can be!

My free time is mainly spent in the world of lifesaving: ranging from volunteering to promote water safety messages and teaching young children crucial first aid and lifesaving techniques, to competing in lifesaving sport at a national level.

About my sessions

As every student is unique and has their own learning styles, my first point of call will be to have a talk to establish which topics you are stronger and weaker at and work out what you want to achieve from the sessions. We will work together to help build up more difficult concepts and can work on exam techniques as well!

During our sessions, we will have recaps of previously learnt material along to check how well the topic has been taken in, and then we can get started covering new materials. I like to use a variety of learning styles throughout my teaching and using different learning aids like diagrams and multimedia where appropriate to really help the material covered be understood fully. Biology is such a visual subject that all of these methods are very useful for full understanding.

Knowing how to answer exam questions in a way to gain maximum marks is always crucial when studying a subject and is especially applicable to Biology. Even knowing all the content may not provide full marks unless you structure your answers correctly, so this is something which we can focus on too. I can expose you to lots of questions which we can work through together, or you can work through in your own time, so we can critically evaluate how we write our answers and get the best marks!

Please send me a message outlining what level you are looking for tuition at and we can go from there to help you achieve top grades!

Questions Jared has answered

Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) causes plants to produce less chlorophyll leading to discolouration of the leaves. Explain why plants infected with TMV have stunted growth.

Less chlorophyll in the leaves means that less photosynthesis can occur. The process of photosynthesis produces glucose, so less photosynthesis will mean that there is less glucose produced. This leads to there being less energy available for growth, as glucose is required for respiration. There will therefore be less amino acids available for growth as glucose is required for their production.Less chlorophyll in the leaves means that less photosynthesis can occur.
