About me

Hi There! My name is Elysia Tanswell (Uh-lis-ee-ya)

I studied English at the University of Southampton and now write professionally.

I studied English, first and foremost because I love storytelling. Books, films poems, all of it. But secondly, because studying English means you get to study a bit of everything. I studied English at the University of Southampton and now write professionally.

I studied English, first and foremost because I love storytelling. Books, films poems, all of it. But secondly, because studying English means you get to study a bit of everything. Stories are told in a context, whether social, historical, or theoretical. "The Crucible" for instance without its historical context is just another in a long line of adaptations of the witch trials, but when you understand the climate that Miller was writing in, the play has a much greater and more universal impact. This is what's so exciting about the topic.

I also took History and Sociology at A-level and very much enjoyed these topics as well.

Both topics give you a greater understanding of the world around you in their own unique way. Both give you an understanding of how and why things are they way they are, and how and why things were the way they were before.

I have experience of a wide mix of exam styles. Closed book, open book, sit in, takeaway, formal, creative, coursework, mixed media, presentations. All have been required of me throughout my time both in school and university. I also have experience in writing a personal statement for university applications.

In terms of the structure of my lessons, I that it's very important to first ascertain what the pupil both thinks and understands about what they have learnt. This is for two reasons. First, so that I can know what the pupil knows, and identify any areas where more help is needed. Secondly, because the subjects I tutor are ones that require the pupil to have their own ideas and analysis. Therefore it's important to pin down what pupils think about the topic. More often than not in these essay driven subjects, pupils have really interesting ideas that just need some developing. My goal is for students to be confident in providing their own analysis of their topics, and to be well equipped to communicate that analysis effectively in the context of exams.

Of course, there is also the nitty-gritty of memorizing that comes with exams. Dates for History, studies for Sociology, quotes for English. I would aim to figure out how students memorizing these things best and find strategies to keep those important things in their mind. Everyone has different methods, whether it's a picture, a rhyme, a song, or a lot of cue card practice.
