About me

Hi, I'm Isaac. I study maths at university, and I chose to study maths because it simply underpins everything we do. A qualification in maths means more than just knowing how to use numbers to me- it means evidence of logical thinking, clear and concise writing, even creativity at points. I've always enjoyed maths as it is a form of puzzle, everything from the most abstract to the most clear is just another puzzle to solve. A qualification in maths means more than just knowing how to use numbers to me- it means evidence of logical thinking, clear and concise writing, even creativity at points. I've always enjoyed maths as it is a form of puzzle, everything from the most abstract to the most clear is just another puzzle to solve. It tells us about the universe, how much an apple costs, and so many things yet to be discovered.

Exams at school were less stressful when I decided I'd keep on learning alongside revision- that was the big shift in mindset that made a huge difference to me. Particularly with maths, continued learning and fascination is the only sure way of keeping grades up. It is a subject where wider reading helps, but most maths students don't recognise it. Applying for university and entrance exams have to be seen as fascinating- the STEP papers especially were instrumental in inspiring my learning.

At university I've been a part of different theatre societies, looking to take on bigger roles in the next few years. I've also been playing lots of boardgames and getting involved with debates- politics and public speaking are important to me.

Each of my tuition sessions will have a flexible and individually tailored style, developing over time. Generally over the course of one hour I would seek to introduce two new and separate concepts, allowing for no skills to fade quickly. I will discuss some theory behind a topic, before working through some examples with the student. I'll provide clear guidance on the most difficult topics, even introducing extra ideas to those looking for challenges. To supplement the lessons I will write some of my own questions, especially when examples are sparse elsewhere.

The most obvious technique I plan to use is open questioning. I find it is far more vital to allow students to get to the answers themselves, as opposed to dictation. I discuss all learning in a positive way, commending good ideas and looking for ways to bring in anything the student already knows.

So far when taking exams, I have found that the best way to revise maths and physics is to practice. There are so many examples online, and the more that I saw, the more prepared I felt. However, when I found a topic slightly random or illogical, it helped a lot to seek out fresh ways of describing concepts. Being taught one topic in multiple ways made a huge difference to my understanding.
