About me

Hi there, I'm Marnie! At this moment in time, I'm studying English language and literature at Oxford University, which has been one of the most rewarding and inspiring opportunities of my life so far. I have just completed my first year, in which I achieved a 1:1 (distinction). Hi there, I'm Marnie! At this moment in time, I'm studying English language and literature at Oxford University, which has been one of the most rewarding and inspiring opportunities of my life so far. I have just completed my first year, in which I achieved a 1:1 (distinction). English is a wonderful subject, where I analyse the language of today's political leaders to the language of Gothic fiction- however, as much as I enjoy learning, I have always loved enthusing others and sharing knowledge. The phrase 'Knowledge is power' may be overused, but I believe in it wholeheartedly, and as a tutor, would love to make my students feel more confident and excited by the prospect of learning. Even though studying for GCSEs or A-Levels often feels exceedingly tedious and wearisome, it really doesn't have to, and I would be thrilled to be able to help lessen any academic burdens or woes! As well as studying for my degree, I play the French horn and a variety of sports, which predominantly include squash and fencing, where I often let off steam after long library sessions at university!

About my sessions

My sessions would be tailored completely to the student's needs- I like to prioritise how a student best studies and digests information- so whether they prefer general discussion, more visual and/or interactive learning, I ensure sessions are as comfortable and effective as possible. My sessions would be tailored completely to the student's needs- I like to prioritise how a student best studies and digests information- so whether they prefer general discussion, more visual and/or interactive learning, I ensure sessions are as comfortable and effective as possible. I understand having online tutoring can be quite an alien concept and unfamiliar ground, but I like my sessions to be relaxed and cheery ( no qualms if you prefer learning with a cup of tea in one hand!), whilst still achieving the student's educational demands. Ideally before teaching, I would be alerted to any classwork or problems which need going over, and I can then plan my sessions from there, going over the issues and forming the best possible learning strategies. But, sessions are by no means dictated by a rigid checklist of goals- of course, overcoming any academic problems is of a vital importance, but if my sessions can help develop general subject confidence and enthusiasm, that too is of fundamental importance. Between sessions, I note anything which I think is best to consolidate next time round, and also any methods the student responds well to; sessions become even more fruitful and relaxed when I get to understand the student further.
