I went to university with no idea what kind of career I wanted but with a passion for English Literature and the creative license it gave me. It's a subject that is often found difficult because of the challenge it poses in relation to language and the many meanings that a writer may attribute to their words. It is a result of this, however, that literature comes to life! I aim to help students by simplifying the texts they are working on and assisting them in channelling their creative energy to inform and inspire their essay writing. Having roughly 160 hours of teaching experience, I understand that tackling a difficult subject can be daunting and so it is important to me that my students feel comfortable to make mistakes and improve in a way that suits them.

About my sessions

First, I will discuss with the student their key objectives and ask them about the parts of the subject they find difficult, whether it's specific texts that are confusing, or they are struggling to express themselves in their essay writing. Next, I will take time to look at the text they are studying or an essay/piece of work they are writing to help me prepare for the lesson. Then, by breaking it down into smaller parts - textual events, characters, themes, literary devices, quotations...

Then, by breaking it down into smaller parts - textual events, characters, themes, literary devices, quotations and how to write about these effectively - the subject becomes more manageable and simpler to grasp. It is through this technique that I will encourage students to fulfil their goals, helping them to further understand the literature in front of them and fuel their own creativity! Progress , to me, is about feeling gradually more comfortable with the work and not feeling intimidated by assessment questions - this is what I hope to instil in my students.
