About me

I study Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge. This choice of degree reflects my interest and passion for science as a whole and will aid me in offering a broad range of science subjects that I am available to tutor. Maths, for me, hasn't always been a smooth ride. From being in bottom set maths at GCSE to studying further maths at A-Level, I've seen myself overcome hurdles I never thought I would. I went from a 'non-maths person' to someone who has realised that with hard work and genuine patience, anything can be achieved. And as a tutor, it is my job to pass on this mentality to my students. Competing against other students for the opportunity to study at some of the best institutions in the world has allowed me to observe the type of qualities universities search for when deciding who to admit. Having attended 6 interviews for university placements, I have plenty of experience when it comes to responding to questions and knowing how to stand out against an audience of similarly talented students. During Sixth form I was assigned to 12 students throughout my first and second years, these included GCSE and A-level students. Guiding students through material and consolidating this with exam questions was something I found extremely enjoyable. The 'light-bulb' moments where students grasp an idea is a very rewarding and motivating experience.

About my sessions

Before each session I will ask for a list of topics that the student wants to be covered, this allows me to make my sessions flexible towards the students and gives me time to prepare appropriate material that will make the most out of the session. Before each session I will ask for a list of topics that the student wants to be covered, this allows me to make my sessions flexible towards the students and gives me time to prepare appropriate material that will make the most out of the session. You also have the opportunity to get to know me via a free meeting that can be arranged. I aim to improve my students confidence by probing their current understanding and filling in gaps in knowledge where required. I will move through at a pace that is suitable for the student, whilst encouraging them to exceed expectations. At the end of each of my tutorials I will ask questions on the material covered, and will finish off by giving them a challenge question that I will discuss at the beginning of the next tutorial. Undoubtedly, problem solving is the most useful skill for tackling any subject. This is a hard skill to learn, but through giving students questions and encouraging them to defend their answers using their understanding of the subject, I hope to take them to a point where they can attempt puzzling questions without the need for guidance. Everyone learns differently, and as a tutor I aim to help my students learn how to revise and what makes 'effective' revision. I have a wealth of resources and notes I used whilst preparing for my A-Levels that I can provide to students. Having been interviewed twice by Cambridge, I have the relevant experience to provide tuition for the STEP, NSAA and PAT exam.
