About me

Hello! My name is Sarah, and I recently graduated from Cambridge University. I have a degree in Education with English and Drama (BA), achieving a 2:1 and a scholarship at St John’s College in my second year. At Pre-U I achieved the highest result in English globally. At University I took part in a great deal of theatre and comedy, touring internationally with the Cambridge Footlights. I have recently returned from Kenya, where I taught English, Drama and Science at a school in Nairobi.

I am an approachable and cheery person, and an enthusiastic teacher. I always approach the sessions with enthusiasm for the subject and for teaching, as well as with a sense of humour. It is crucial to me that the sessions are enjoyable, and I do my best to foster confidence and enjoyment in the subject.

About my sessions

A student of Education, I understand the theory behind what makes a ‘good teacher’. Studying educational Philosophy expanded my understanding of the teacher-student relationship regarding learning approaches, and the Cambridge supervision system made me value challenging one-on-one tutorials combined with a helpful, clear approach to subject matter. Not only were these thought-provoking in ways that enhanced my critical thinking and understanding, but discussions were lively and engaging, and my interest in my subjects grew. I take, therefore, an individualised and co-operative approach to learning. I tailor to specific needs of the pupil and adopt an exploratory perspective, as well as encouraging focussed and joyful engagement, challenging pupils to think for themselves - still providing guidance in a non-patronising manner. I also understand the importance of clarity - a structured and organised approach is often most helpful when it comes to exam preparation and a syllabus.

Sessions are tailored to suit the student, and what would be most helpful. I would work with students on areas where they are unclear, encourage independent thinking to address these areas, and work on assessing the student’s own work such that they can spot targets for improvement. I might work with past paper questions as a basis of discussion and to develop technique and critical thinking, alongside informal quizzes to measure progress and ensure understanding.
