About me

I'm in my final year, studying English with French (along with quite a bit of student theatre) at Cambridge University. For the first few terms, I felt like I was going through the motions -- then something clicked and I fell in love with my degree. I was excited to learn, and fortunately that excitement has stayed with me (and made studying a lot more enjoyable). It's something I want to pass on to more people because I truly believe that finding this love of learning is what got me...

For the first few terms, I felt like I was going through the motions -- then something clicked and I fell in love with my degree. I was excited to learn, and fortunately that excitement has stayed with me (and made studying a lot more enjoyable). It's something I want to pass on to more people because I truly believe that finding this love of learning is what got me a First in Part I of my degree. Of course, exam technique is also important -- understanding how to read a mark scheme and jump through hoops got me 6A* and As at A Level and 10 A*s at GCSE. But focusing on topics and texts I enjoyed, finding something in them to be in interested in and that made me want to know more was just as important, and it's a balance between these two aspects that I want to bring to other students to help them achieve the best that they can.

About my sessions

My tutoring style is super simple. Exams, ultimately, are a balance of learning technique and learning information. You need facts, vocab and arguments that can be adapted to a range of questions, and you need a structure into which you can quickly arrange that information.

My tutoring style is super simple. Exams, ultimately, are a balance of learning technique and learning information. You need facts, vocab and arguments that can be adapted to a range of questions, and you need a structure into which you can quickly arrange that information.

After assessing where a student is, it's that structure that I tackle first. I work with them to create a framework to help them ace the mark scheme and keep them focused on the question. Knowing that when you sit down in that exam, you have an opening sentence that will always work or a plan that can be easily adapted gives students the confidence that immediately improves results.

Most importantly, though, I find out what a student is interested in and use that to practise, whether it's writing a PEE paragraph or speaking in French. Working with them to find the topic or angle that really excites and engages them is key.

For exams, I start with mindmaps and essay plans. They boost confidence by showing students what they do know while enabling progress by identifying gaps in knowledge. It's easy for both of us to see their strengths and weaknesses. What makes this method so effective is that the student can clearly see their improvement, not becoming disheartened because they know they're moving forwards.

It's moving at their pace that's most important, adapting to what they're interested in, and rethinking again and again until something clicks.
