About me

I'm in my final year studying English with French (by way of an MML degree in French and German, with a fairly extreme amount of student theatre on the side) at Cambridge University. After going through the motions for the first few terms, something clicked and I fell in love with my degree. I was excited to learn, and fortunately that excitement has stayed with me. After going through the motions for the first few terms, something clicked and I fell in love with my degree. I was excited to learn, and fortunately that excitement has stayed with me. It's something I want to pass on to more people because I truly believe that this love of learning is what got me a First in Part I of my degree. Of course, exam technique is important, and understanding how to jump through the hoops set by a mark scheme is what got me 6 A*s and As at A Level and 10 A*s at GCSE. But focusing on topics and texts I enjoyed, finding in what I was interested in and what made me want to know more was just as important, and it's a balance between these two aspects that I want to bring to other students to help them achieve the best that they can.

About my sessions

My tutoring style is super simple. Exams, when it comes down to it, are a balance of learning technique and learning information. You need facts, vocab and arguments that can be adapted to a range of questions, and you need a structure which, with two hours on the clock, you can quickly arrange all that information into. From here, you refine -- find a more obscure quotation or learn a debating phrase with a more complex sentence structure you can have ready to slot in. The way in, though, is...

The way in, though, is to find out what the student is interested in. Thorough research on my part to know as much as I can about what the student is studying is key, but so is working with them to find that one topic or angle that really excites and engages them. Mindmaps and essay plans help to boost a student's confidence by showing them what they do know while enabling them to progress by identifying the gaps in their knowledge. It's easy to see what progress has been made and what still needs work as responses fill out, showing some quotes starting to spring to mind immediately and some arguments still not quite solidified. What I believe makes this method so effective -- and what has made it effective for me personally -- is that the student can clearly see their improvement, avoiding becoming disheartened as they know they are moving forwards. It's moving at their pace that's most important, adapting to what they're interested in and rethinking again and again until the moment when it clicks.
