About me

Hi, I'm Hannah and I'm currently in my third year studying English Language and Literature at Somerville College, Oxford. I really enjoy my course because we get to take an in-depth look at literature from the Anglo-Saxon era right up to the present day. At the moment, my particular interests include postcolonial literature and the Gothic but I also love anything by Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy or Henrik Ibsen.

Taking exams and applying for university can be very stressful but I believe that it's important to make them as enjoyable as possible for yourself by following your own interests and staying organised. Through tutoring, I hope I can share some of my own love of learning with you, as well as giving tips which will not just be useful for a single set of exams but for the rest of your academic career. I have plenty of experience: all the students I have tutored so far have achieved 8 and 9 grades in their English Language and Literature GCSEs.

Outside of work and tutoring, I am very involved with student drama and I also enjoy creative writing - this year I am the editor of Oxford University Poetry Society's termly magazine, ASH. I love travelling and am hoping to put some of the money I earn from tutoring towards this. I'm also on the Somerville College University Challenge Team!

About my sessions

In our first lesson, we'll discuss which areas the student struggles with and what they would like to improve. Once we have established these goals, I'll create a plan which will enable us to work towards them in subsequent lessons. I will tailor my tutoring sessions to the needs of each individual student; they could involve anything from vocab tests and speaking practice to running through past papers and making revision mind-maps. I have also created a variety of resources on exam...

I have also created a variety of resources on exam technique for previous students which I am happy to share. Contrary to popular belief, I find that there are certain approaches and essay 'formulae' which you can use to boost your performance in subjects like English and History: I will be sure to emphasise these when working with students so that they are confident in the technique as well as the content of their subjects. I'll make the lessons as fun and interesting as possible, with an emphasis on encouraging students to discover answers for themselves, as I believe that this is the best way to learn.
