About me

Hi, my name is Nils Masters and I have recently graduated from Cambridge University with a first class degree in history. I can teach history at GCSE, A level and degree standard and am also able to prepare candidates for interviews at Oxbridge. History has fascinated me from a young age and I truly believe that getting to enjoy the subject is the best way to do well. I hope that our discussions will stimulate an interest as well as helping you get the grades you want. I have extensive experience in the subject and have worked in educational roles since my first year of university, so am well qualified to help you achieve your goals in this area.

I can also teach German for GCSE and A level. I have lived and worked in Germany and completed work for my undergraduate degree using entirely German literature. I will divide classes into reading, writing, grammar and speaking. We can use the interactive settings to look at exercises together, which I will set. It is important to continue speaking the language as much as possible so I will keep English speaking to a minimum, only using it to explain when absolutely necessary.

About my sessions

I will begin with a short online discussion so that you can tell me what your goals are. Whether it's classwork, exams or interviews, we can put a plan together to target what you feel are your weaknesses and start preparing for the next challenge. My classes will involve interactive examples, where I will display exam questions or source material on the whiteboard, we will then go over these examples together to prepare for tackling them in an exam setting. More generally, we will work on what makes a great essay; this will involve both content and style, you need to have a good handle on historical knowledge but also the ability to organise the essay and use grammar correctly. I can teach memory techniques for exams and prepare short quizzes to help with consolidation. I am also prepared to set and mark work that you have completed and go over it in lesson.

Questions Nils has answered

How are images used in historical enquiry and how can they be problematic sources?

Think about a period you have studied, lets say Nazi Germany. First of all, think about what we learn from images. Propaganda is a good point of discussion. Visual representation is a powerful medium of transmission. Points might include that anyone can process an image, it doesn't have the same barriers as text in this regard. Think about how visual stereotypes can stick emotively in people's thoughts, this is particularly the case for children. Your arguments might include that images require separate consideration because they work in different ways; think about how an image puts across arguments and how this differs from the ways in which texts put across arguments.
The problems of using images can be in their lack of precision. If images convey an impression, if they don't use language to articulate their point, isn't there more chance that we, as historians, might miss the point? A good example to illustrate this is devotional imagery. We might look at a medieval depiction of the crucifixion and think that it is simply a drawing of, or a representation of Jesus, but this was more than that, medieval people truly believed the picture itself was sacred, that it could work miracles and interact with reality. You might make the point that the concept of a picture can mean different things across time, making them difficult to analyse in modern times.
