About me

Hello. My name is Shefali, and I'm studying Spanish and Italian at Cambridge. I was drawn to them both because of the welcoming, passionate people that speak the languages, and because of the amazing Spanish and Italian literature and culture that give an insight into a variety of fascinating times, places and societies. I was drawn to them both because of the welcoming, passionate people that speak the languages, and because of the amazing Spanish and Italian literature and culture that give an insight into a variety of fascinating times, places and societies. Dante, Gabriel García Márquez and Machiavelli, to name just a few authors from these places, are some of the most important thinkers in history. I feel excited about sharing my passion for such people, and their languages, with my students. Hopefully, after a few sessions, you will be enjoying reading some of their great works too!

Whether you are aiming for an exam, university preparation, or any other goal, we will break it down into the various areas you need to improve, and work on them together. When I am working towards exams, I tend to find timetabling very useful. So, we can aim to set a timeline for what we are aiming to achieve, in order to make each lesson a targeted and focused session, and in order to keep track of how much progress we are making.

About my sessions

The structure of most lessons will involve explaining a particular concept, and then putting this understanding into practice. The student will go through what they don't understand about the concept (or, ideally, this will have been agreed upon in the previous lesson), then I will explain it slowly and clearly. After this, we will discuss it together to see if the student has understood, and then work through some exercises: practice essay plans, or grammar exercises, for example.

After this, we will discuss it together to see if the student has understood, and then work through some exercises: practice essay plans, or grammar exercises, for example.

We will review how much progress we have made by reviewing in subsequent sessions what was learned in the previous session. I often find the best way to check if someone has understood a concept is by asking them to explain it back to me: this could involve me giving you a few 'test' questions, you explaining a theme from a novel we worked on the previous time, and so on. If you feel you still don't understand something, we can go through it again together.

If we are working on university entrance preparation, we will begin by discussing what stage you have reached so far, and if you would like direction on what to include in personal statements and on what to prepare before your interview. We will work together on particular texts you have mentioned in your personal statement that you may be asked about at interview, and do some speaking practice in the language. We can also do practice interviews, both for starting a language from scratch and for those studying post A-level.
