About me

Hi! I'm Dan and I’m a first-year law student at the University of Oxford. It may seem unusual for a maths tutor to be pursuing a legal career, but this change of tack is not due to any lack of interest in maths (nor any inability in the subject!). It may seem unusual for a maths tutor to be pursuing a legal career, but this change of tack is not due to any lack of interest in maths (nor any inability in the subject!). Even now I miss the logical, step-by-step methodology that underlies questions of algebra and trigonometric functions. At school I found myself helping fellow maths students in class who were struggling to understand certain parts of the syllabus, and this developed my communicative skills in explaining difficult concepts, so I am already experienced in conveying key information.

In studying for exams, my focus was on organisation, and resultingly the stress of taking exams usually arrived only in the few days or weeks preceding them. Exams will always be stressful, but being well-prepared for them, knowing that you have covered what you need to cover, is the best way to both reduce exam nerves and ensure you perform to the best of your ability.

About my sessions

Before I start tutoring you (or your child), I will ask you which exam board your school uses so I can find the correct course specification online and ensure I cover everything necessary. Before I start tutoring you (or your child), I will ask you which exam board your school uses so I can find the correct course specification online and ensure I cover everything necessary. I will also ask you what you would like to go through in the tutoring session, so I can prepare in advance for the lesson by finding the right resources. By doing this I can tailor the sessions to suit the areas of maths that you need to target. I will also ask you to do some past-papers to secure a comprehensive understanding of the subject.

The sessions will be structured as follows. First, for about 5-10 minutes, we will go through the work set at the end of the previous session and see if there are any problems that need flagging up and talking through. Following this, I will proceed to guide you through the chosen topic, starting with the basic methodology and then applying this to practice questions – a key learning technique. I will then leave you to complete some more independently under my supervision to ensure correct understanding. We may then push on to harder questions which branch between topics, to ensure that you are ready for exam-style questions. Finally, I will ask you to complete some follow-up work for the following session and ask you on what you would like to focus in the next session.

This structure ensures a comprehensive, coherent method of learning, employing the techniques I myself used to get top grades and secure my place at university!
