I am bi-lingual English-Italian and am especially interested in Latin literature and Archaeology. I think the thing that interests me the most about my degree is the current relevance of Classics in our modern day society, and how Latin literature, despite the many thousands of years that separate us from it, still can touch us today. Much of my aim in teaching Latin and Classics is to bring them 'to life' and render them interesting: they are so much more than a cut and dried text to be studied. I also learnt much of my own Latin from a tutor in a one-to-one setting so know how it feels to be on the receiving end of private lessons and try to make my own as engaging as possible.

As regards Italian, I go back to Italy for three months every year and am completely fluent in it. Much like with Classics, I try to keep my lessons stimulating, interactive and relevant, by covering things required for the student's syllabus whilst also adding some authentic Italian culture and literature.

About my sessions

My lessons will revolve around topics areas which will have been discussed in a preliminary meeting. From this, I will focus on unseen practice and strategies, or discussion of themes in set text passages (for Latin in particular), as well as furthering my student's essay style by looking at work of theirs, and brainstorming ways to develop it. Further to this, I will provide the student with extra information that they can deploy at a later date to enrich their own essays. In an Italian...

In an Italian lesson, I will focus a lot more on Italian conversation, discussing topics of current affairs and texts/movies to be prepared (for oral practice and discursive essays). I would aim to further my student's essay style by brainstorming idiomatic phrases to distinguish them from their peers and by setting essay titles for them to practice ideas we had discussed in lessons, in their own time.

After a few sessions, I would also set a mini-quiz to encourage revision of work they had undertaken both at school and in lessons with me, and use this as a gauge for how much progress had been made, and where we should take future lessons. Above all however, what I would stress as the most important element of lessons with me is that I would work with my student to ensure they are getting the most out of the tutoring session; if there is a learning style which isn't working for him/her I would adapt to suit their needs as much as possible, to ensure that they progress and ultimately excel!
